Choose your Dublin

First time in Dublin?

Pick one main admission, then leave room for the streets between. These three visits tell different stories; you do not need to fit them all into one day.

Choose your Dublin

Museums and a rainy-day plan

Keep an indoor alternative ready. Read the individual guide for admission, exhibition and access details; a free permanent collection does not make every event or exhibition free.

The Merrion Square entrance facade of the National Gallery of Ireland

National Gallery of Ireland

Experience 8.5/10Visitor friendliness 9.0/10

The National Gallery makes a free art stop in central Dublin, with Irish paintings alongside European works by Caravaggio, Vermeer and others. A small route gives you time to look closely; a ticketed temporary exhibition can be a separate visit.

Choose your Dublin

Gardens, parks and a family day out

Choose the type of outing before choosing the ticket. A garden visit, a large park and a zoo need different amounts of energy; check facilities and access for your own group.

Dublin Zoo’s entrance wall and visitor building in 2006

Dublin Zoo

Experience 8.0/10Visitor friendliness 7.0/10

Dublin Zoo is a substantial ticketed outing within Phoenix Park, with routes through elephant, savanna, primate and smaller animal habitats. Plan a half-day rather than treating it as a quick extra on a city walk.

Choose your Dublin

Coastal places near Dublin

Give the coast its own outing. Harbour viewpoints, a pier and a hill walk are different experiences. Check transport, weather and the exact walking route rather than assuming every coastal visit is an easy stroll.

Dublin planning questions

What should I do on a first visit to Dublin?

Choose a compact area and one main visit: Trinity and the Kildare Street museums, the cathedral quarter, or EPIC and the Docklands. Read the place guides, check timed admissions, then customise one of the three suggested days. The sequences are planning suggestions, not booked tours.

Can I plan one, two or three days in Dublin?

Yes. Start with a suggested day below, or open the Dublin trip planner and choose up to three local days. Add or remove supported places and save a named plan on this browser. Leave separate time for arrival, transfers, meals and breaks.

What can I do in Dublin when it rains?

Use an indoor visit as your anchor. The National Gallery, National Museum of Ireland and EPIC give different choices; read their guides for ticket and access details. Keep outdoor sections optional and check the actual opening information for your date.

Do I need a car to explore Dublin?

For a central visit, start by comparing walking with bus, Luas and DART journeys. TFI provides visitor transport and ticket information. Coastal and hillside outings need their own journey and return-service checks; a pin on the map does not confirm a service or an accessible entrance.

Are all the places on this map in Dublin city?

No. The catalogue includes individual points within a 30 km straight-line circle around Dublin city centre, including parts of neighbouring counties. That radius is not a road distance, and a whole estate or trail can extend outside it. The curated choices above focus on Dublin visitor places.

Can I save and print my Dublin itinerary?

Yes. Add a supported place to the planner, choose a day and confirm it. Save a named trip in this browser, share its itinerary link, or use the print and download tools. Saved trips do not sync between devices. If a stop has no visit estimate, the planner says so; transfer times are not calculated.

Parking, fuel and rest stops appear under Facilities. They are practical references, not places to visit.

See a 1,200-year-old illuminated manuscript, walk through the Old Library's Long Room and decide whether the newer digital exhibition is worth adding to your Dublin day.

The Long Room is open during its redevelopment, but almost all of its books have been removed for conservation; only the first four bays retain books. Historic photographs show fuller shelves than you will see now. The manuscript is displayed behind glass, and the pages change several times a year.

How I built the Dublin guide

By Nikhil (Nick) · Editorial notes updated . Researched planning notes explaining this guide's choices; individual listings are not presented as personal visit reviews.

I designed the Dublin guide for the moment when a list of things to do becomes too long to help. The map is useful for discovering possibilities, but a good day needs a smaller decision: what interests this group, what can sit together comfortably, and which visit deserves a booking? That is why the site offers collections, individual place notes and editable plans alongside the map. These are researched planning choices, rather than a claim that I personally inspected every attraction or service in the directory.

For a first city visit, I would begin with a subject and a neighbourhood. Trinity and Kildare Street give the day a different focus from the medieval area around the cathedrals or the river and emigration story in the Docklands. One substantial indoor visit can anchor the plan, with a walk and a meal around it. Adding another famous name is only useful if the arrival arrangements, attention and time still work for everyone travelling.

The wider discovery map deliberately reaches beyond central Dublin. Its radius describes straight-line geography; it does not describe a thirty-minute trip, a public transport fare zone or a walkable circuit. A coastal outing and a city museum afternoon can both be good choices, but they need separate transport thinking. I keep practical arrival links beside the places so that you can investigate the actual last part of the journey before saving a plan that merely looks compact on screen.

Weather changes the order of a Dublin day more easily than it changes its purpose. If your interest is history or art, an indoor collection can remain the centre of the visit while a park or waterfront section becomes optional. I would decide which admission or opening window matters first, then leave the outdoor pieces flexible. A rainy-day collection is a starting selection; it still needs a check of opening hours, ticket coverage and the distance between its individual venues.

The ratings are there to make those trade-offs easier to discuss. Experience describes the likely reward for a suitable visitor; Visitor friendliness considers the practical ease recorded in the research. Read the reasons beneath the numbers, especially when travelling with children, a mobility requirement or a tight budget. A lower practical score can mean a worthwhile place needs more preparation. Keep a short list, open its detailed notes and use the official provider links for the final booking and access decisions.
