Ireland & India / Plan by season

When should you go?

Choose the kind of day you want before choosing the month. A museum-led Dublin break, a Wicklow mountain walk and a Goa beach stay respond very differently to rain, heat, daylight and seasonal services. The destination notes below make those tradeoffs visible without requiring the interactive map. Every destination links to its full guide and its own twelve monthly planning notes.

The labels are editorial planning judgements, rather than weather forecasts or claims about the safest month. A 'Good' label means the season can suit the visit described in that guide; it does not promise clear skies, open facilities or a particular price. Read the reason alongside the label. A city can work in winter with indoor anchors, while the same month's daylight makes a long coastal or hillwalking circuit impractical.

For Ireland, build flexibility around the activity with the least weather tolerance. Keep an indoor alternative beside a city walk, check the mountain forecast before heading onto exposed Wicklow routes and treat beach access as a local conditions decision. Longer summer evenings give more time, but they do not remove tide, wind or parking constraints. Confirm transport before planning an early start or late return.

For India, avoid treating the whole country as a single climate. Delhi's urban sightseeing, Goa's coast and high-altitude Spiti need different seasonal decisions. Heat, air quality, monsoon conditions and mountain road access can matter more than how attractive a month looks on a calendar. Check current local authority notices and the specific transport you intend to use before paying for a fixed itinerary.

The preferred-month shortlist is a starting point for comparison, not a ranking of every possible trip. Open the full guide for day plans, ratings, practical notes and source links. A return connection, an unsuitable trail grade or a closure may rule out your chosen route even during a preferred month. Keep a shorter version of each day so a delayed start does not turn into a rushed drive or missed bus.

Dublin

Editorial preference: April–June and September balance outdoor sightseeing with an adaptable city programme. Month labels describe planning suitability, not a weather forecast or a promise of lower prices. Check Met Éireann and event dates before travel.

Editorial preferred months: April, May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Short daylight favours museums and compact central walks; check post-holiday opening.

February · Challenging

A workable indoor city break with a warm layer for riverside walking.

March · Good

Check Saint Patrick’s festival dates before choosing accommodation or transport.

April · Good

Longer afternoons make park breaks easier between galleries and historic sites.

May · Good

A strong month for combining cultural visits with unhurried neighbourhood walks.

June · Good

Long daylight supports evening walks; reserve headline admissions before your visit.

July · Good

Plan for busy attractions and compare accommodation before committing to dates.

August · Good

Leave buffers around popular admissions and keep an indoor option for showers.

September · Good

A useful balance of daylight, museums and evenings exploring on foot.

October · Good

Move park visits earlier in the day and check current attraction notices.

November · Challenging

Choose fewer outdoor transfers and a museum or cathedral as each day’s anchor.

December · Challenging

Check holiday closures and book meals or events individually; do not assume normal hours.

Glendalough

April–June and September are editorial picks for a walking-led stay. Conditions at height can differ from the valley in every month. Review the mountain forecast, NPWS notices and your group’s ability; a monthly suitability label never clears a route for hiking.

Editorial preferred months: April, May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Keep to a short valley visit if frost, flooding or wind makes higher routes unsuitable.

February · Challenging

Short daylight and winter footing call for conservative walks and an early turnaround.

March · Mixed

Longer afternoons help, but treat exposed routes as mountain walks with variable conditions.

April · Good

A useful month for combining the monastic site with flexible lower-valley walking.

May · Good

Longer days allow a separate hiking day when weather and ability align.

June · Good

Good daylight for an unhurried visit; busy weekends still need parking or bus planning.

July · Good

Start early for popular trailheads and carry water rather than relying on facilities en route.

August · Good

Summer does not remove mountain weather risk; reserve accommodation and verify return transport.

September · Good

Often a practical walking month, with an earlier finish than midsummer.

October · Mixed

Woodland walks can suit a shorter day; wet leaves and diminishing daylight affect pace.

November · Challenging

Choose the monastic site and lower valley over an ambitious exposed-route plan.

December · Challenging

Check visitor-centre holiday closures; outdoor access does not imply staffed facilities are open.

Copper Coast

April–September gives the most flexibility for an outdoor itinerary, with May, June and September our editorial preference. The month is less important than wind, sea state and daylight for an individual cove visit. Tide predictions do not guarantee safe access.

Editorial preferred months: April, May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Plan a short visit around a confirmed indoor opening; exposed coves may be unsuitable.

February · Challenging

Winter seas and short days favour village stops and flexible viewpoints over shore exploration.

March · Mixed

Use a compact route and check visitor-centre hours before committing to the coast drive.

April · Good

Longer days support the visitor centre plus a few coves, with layers for coastal wind.

May · Good

A strong month for slow photography and a separate Ann Valley walking day.

June · Good

Long daylight gives more room to change the stop order around weather and tide.

July · Good

Check parking and seasonal facilities; a busy beach is not evidence of safe swimming.

August · Good

Allow buffers at popular coves and avoid squeezing too many stops into a single day.

September · Good

A useful shoulder-season choice; confirm cafés and facilities as summer schedules change.

October · Mixed

Keep walks earlier and consider a shorter route if wind or showers increase.

November · Challenging

Prioritise confirmed heritage openings and be ready to abandon exposed shore stops.

December · Challenging

Check holiday hours; a coast road drive does not guarantee beach or toilet access.

Galway

April–June and September are editorial picks for a city-and-coast balance. Summer is attractive for longer evenings, but check the actual festival calendar and accommodation before committing. Rain and Atlantic wind are possible throughout the year, so retain an indoor alternative.

Editorial preferred months: April, May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Use museums and cafés as anchors, with shorter waterfront walks in daylight.

February · Challenging

A quieter-style city itinerary can work, but the seafront needs weather flexibility.

March · Mixed

Check festival and holiday dates, then leave room for a museum if the coast is windy.

April · Good

Longer days make the centre and a separate Salthill outing easier to combine.

May · Good

A useful time for walking-based days with a light indoor backup.

June · Good

Long evenings suit the waterfront; compare accommodation before fixing dates.

July · Good

Check major event dates and book rooms early if your trip overlaps busy periods.

August · Good

Expect demand for popular stays and leave flexible time around the coastal day.

September · Good

A strong choice for a slower city break and university-area walk.

October · Mixed

Keep seafront walks earlier and verify museum seasonal hours.

November · Challenging

Prioritise the centre and indoor visits; treat Salthill as a conditions-dependent outing.

December · Challenging

Check holiday opening and return buses before planning an evening away from your base.

Killarney

April–June and September are our editorial preference for balancing walking with heritage visits. Summer offers long daylight but needs more advance planning for popular stays. Conditions, flooding and seasonal openings still govern each day; these month labels are not a trail-safety or weather guarantee.

Editorial preferred months: April, May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Use a town-based stay and short low-level walks, checking storm or flooding notices first.

February · Challenging

A compact break can work, but seasonal castle and farm access may be limited.

March · Mixed

Recheck the new season’s admission dates before building the trip around an interior tour.

April · Good

A useful month for a park-and-heritage stay with flexible walking days.

May · Good

Longer daylight supports an unhurried Muckross day and separate Ross Island walk.

June · Good

Good daylight for spreading the park across several days; book a practical accommodation base.

July · Good

Expect pressure on popular parking and admissions; start early and reduce unnecessary driving.

August · Good

Keep a wet-weather fallback and reserve the stays or experiences that matter to you.

September · Good

A strong shoulder-season choice; still check return transport and current park notices.

October · Mixed

Autumn woodland can reward a slower visit, but stay well away from deer and keep days shorter.

November · Challenging

Expect reduced seasonal admissions and build around confirmed openings and low-level walks.

December · Challenging

Check holiday closures and do not assume that open park paths mean staffed facilities are available.

Wicklow

Outdoor visits depend on the current weather, daylight and seasonal admissions. Garden and house hours differ from trail access. The forecast tool uses a fixed Laragh reference point; it is not a forecast for every part of the county or a mountain-route clearance.

July · Good

August · Good

Summer does not remove mountain weather risk; reserve accommodation and verify return transport.

September · Good

Often a practical walking month, with an earlier finish than midsummer.

October · Mixed

Woodland walks can suit a shorter day; wet leaves and diminishing daylight affect pace.

November · Challenging

Choose the monastic site and lower valley over an ambitious exposed-route plan.

December · Challenging

Check visitor-centre holiday closures; outdoor access does not imply staffed facilities are open.

Mizen & West Cork

May, June and September are our editorial preference for a flexible coastal stay. Seasonal patterns do not promise visibility, safe water conditions or open paths. Confirm Mizen’s live calendar and current local conditions for your date.

Editorial preferred months: May, June, September.

January · Challenging

Expect shorter daylight and limited seasonal opening; confirm the actual date and keep a town or harbour alternative.

February · Challenging

Expect shorter daylight and limited seasonal opening; confirm the actual date and keep a town or harbour alternative.

March · Challenging

Expect shorter daylight and limited seasonal opening; confirm the actual date and keep a town or harbour alternative.

April · Mixed

Keep the route flexible and check Mizen’s date-specific opening; shorten outdoor time when conditions require it.

May · Good

Longer daylight leaves more room for a local coastal day, but check wind, visibility and the operator’s current access notice.

June · Good

Longer daylight leaves more room for a local coastal day, but check wind, visibility and the operator’s current access notice.

July · Good

Longer daylight leaves more room for a local coastal day, but check wind, visibility and the operator’s current access notice.

December · Challenging

Expect shorter daylight and limited seasonal opening; confirm the actual date and keep a town or harbour alternative.

Delhi

Our month labels describe outdoor sightseeing comfort, not a forecast. Delhi Tourism identifies spring and autumn as milder, summer as very hot and July to mid-September as humid and wet. Cooler weather does not guarantee good air quality: check the current AQI before choosing long outdoor days.

Editorial preferred months: February, March, October.

January · Mixed

Cold mornings; keep the first outdoor stop flexible and check visibility.

February · Good

A useful starting choice for monuments and longer neighbourhood walks.

March · Good

Comfortable early starts; afternoons become warmer as the month progresses.

April · Mixed

Reduce exposed walking and plan a substantial indoor lunch break.

May · Challenging

Strong heat makes a packed outdoor itinerary a poor default.

June · Challenging

Keep sightseeing short and watch heat alerts before each outing.

July · Mixed

Rain and humidity favour flexible, shorter district-based plans.

August · Mixed

Build in rain cover and extra transfer time after heavy showers.

September · Mixed

A transition month; do not assume monsoon conditions have ended.

October · Good

Often easier walking temperatures; check air quality alongside the forecast.

November · Mixed

Pleasant temperatures can coincide with poor air; retain indoor alternatives.

December · Mixed

Warm layers and flexible transport connections help with cold mornings.

Amritsar

The district describes hot weather from April–June and a monsoon mainly from July into early September. Our labels favour walking comfort in spring and autumn. Winter brings colder mornings, so keep early starts and transport connections flexible. Monthly advice is seasonal context, not a rain or visibility forecast.

Editorial preferred months: February, March, October, November.

January · Mixed

Cold mornings suit later starts and warm layers for temple visits.

February · Good

Generally a useful window for a balanced walking and museum break.

March · Good

A good starting choice; build shade into increasingly warm afternoons.

April · Mixed

Heat builds, so separate outdoor visits with a proper rest.

May · Challenging

Prioritise short early outings and avoid an ambitious open-air schedule.

June · Challenging

Strong heat can make long queues and pavement walking uncomfortable.

July · Mixed

Monsoon rain and humidity require flexible transfers and sheltered breaks.

August · Mixed

Keep one main activity each day with room for rain changes.

September · Mixed

Expect a transition: do not rely on uniformly dry conditions.

October · Good

A useful balance for heritage visits, markets and outdoor fort time.

November · Good

Cooler walking conditions; pack a layer for morning and evening.

December · Mixed

Choose warm accommodation and allow flexibility around cold starts.

Rishikesh

Spring and autumn generally suit a combination of walking and cultural visits. Rafting has a restricted operating season and can be suspended within it; the tourism board describes a broad September–June window, which is not a guarantee of operation. Monsoon months need particular flexibility around rivers, hills and roads.

Editorial preferred months: February, March, April, October, November.

January · Mixed

Cool mornings favour layers; ask about river-water and activity conditions.

February · Good

A useful time to combine gentle walks, yoga and cultural visits.

March · Good

Comfortable planning window, with advance checks for busy festival periods.

April · Good

Early walking works well; increasingly warm afternoons suit a slower pace.

May · Mixed

Heat reduces comfortable walking time; keep shade and indoor breaks.

June · Mixed

Hot weather and changing rainfall call for flexible activity bookings.

July · Challenging

Monsoon conditions make river adventure an unsuitable default plan.

August · Challenging

Prioritise indoor study and short visits only when local conditions allow.

September · Mixed

Reopening of activities depends on permissions and river conditions.

October · Good

Often a useful outdoor window; reconfirm activities close to departure.

November · Good

Good for slower sightseeing, with a warmer layer for evenings.

December · Mixed

Cool mornings and shorter days reward a relaxed, later start.

India

Goa

Goa is tropical, with a hot build-up before monsoon rain that normally dominates June–September. Our labels favour a first trip combining heritage and coast, rather than specialist monsoon travel. Even in the generally drier months, a beach forecast does not establish safe swimming conditions; follow the lifesavers on site.

Editorial preferred months: January, February, November, December.

January · Good

A useful coast-and-heritage window; reserve stays ahead of busy dates.

February · Good

Generally comfortable for a mixed itinerary with midday shade breaks.

March · Mixed

Warmer conditions favour early heritage visits and slower afternoons.

April · Mixed

Keep walking short in the heat and choose accommodation carefully.

May · Challenging

Heat and humidity make long exposed sightseeing days less appealing.

June · Challenging

Monsoon arrival changes sea conditions and outdoor activity availability.

July · Challenging

Plan around heavy rain; beach swimming is not a default activity.

August · Challenging

Expect wet-weather flexibility and verify every seasonal excursion.

September · Mixed

Rain may continue; select a heritage focus and refundable plans.

October · Mixed

A transition month with variable rain and reopening of seasonal services.

November · Good

Often suits the combined coast and city itinerary in this guide.

December · Good

Good seasonal fit, with holiday crowds and accommodation pressure.

Spiti Valley

For a first general sightseeing trip, summer and early autumn are more practical starting points than winter. June still requires confirmation that the chosen approach is open; September still requires road and weather checks. July–August can bring disruption on approach roads even when the inner valley is relatively dry. Winter is specialist travel.

Editorial preferred months: June, September.

January · Challenging

Severe cold and restricted access make this a specialist winter journey.

February · Challenging

Do not use the summer itinerary without winter-specific local arrangements.

March · Challenging

Snow, cold and limited services still demand substantial contingencies.

April · Challenging

Early-season access is route-dependent; a through-circuit is not a default.

May · Mixed

Confirm every overnight stop and approach road before reserving a circuit.

June · Good

Useful first-trip window only after verifying the chosen road has opened.

July · Mixed

Watch conditions across the entire approach, including lower mountain roads.

August · Mixed

Retain buffer days for weather-related disruption and changing road access.

September · Good

A useful planning choice with cold evenings and daily road checks.

October · Mixed

Increasing cold and closure risk require a conservative route and flexibility.

November · Challenging

Treat conditions as winter travel rather than late-season summer sightseeing.

December · Challenging

Limited services and snow make a casual first visit a poor fit.
