The editorial method
Useful ratings have reasons.
Our destination scores help you compare the type of trip a place offers. They are editorial judgements, not visitor reviews, safety certifications or a ranking of entire countries.
Five questions, five scores
- Scenery: how much the destination offers someone travelling for landscape.
- Heritage: the depth and variety of accessible history and culture.
- Car-free ease: whether the selected local sights can reasonably be visited by walking and scheduled public transport. Last-mile gaps lower the score.
- Family suitability: the flexibility of shorter visits and options for mixed ages. This is not a guarantee of accessibility or suitability for every child.
- Value: the balance of useful low-cost experiences and transport or admission commitments. It is not a quoted budget.
Reading the scale
1 means a poor match for that particular interest; 2 means limited options or substantial compromises; 3 means worthwhile with tradeoffs; 4 means a strong fit; 5 means an exceptional fit within this small collection. There is no calculated overall star rating. Compare the categories that matter to you.
What supports a guide?
Official tourism, attraction and transport sources support destination facts. Seasonal advice and itinerary design are editorial synthesis. Every guide links its sources and states the source-check date. Opening hours, fares, closures and transport timetables can change; links let you check the current detail. Suggested stop durations are planning allowances, not measured visits.
Research and personal experience
The new collection is source-based and prepared with AI assistance. It does not imply that Nick personally visited or tested every destination. Firsthand films and historical trips are identified separately. Contact Nick to flag corrections or ask about the sources. The featured planning collection covers selected destinations. The wider country atlases include additional place guides, discovery briefs and service records.
Your ratings are yours
Personal field notes and scores are stored locally on your device. They do not create a public review and are never included in an aggregate visitor score. There are no invented testimonials or visitor counts.
Access and safety
A score cannot describe every access need. Ask the venue about step-free routes, toilets, assistance and current closures. A weather forecast is not a warning service or a guarantee that roads, trails or beaches are safe.
Individual places · Spiti-style planning axes
Experience and Visitor friendliness, out of 10
Dublin-area places, Galway stops and Glendalough visitor experiences have a separate place-level editorial assessment. This adapts the two visible axes from the historical Spiti framework; it is not its 17-criterion whole-trip audit. The five destination suitability categories above remain a separate out-of-five comparison.
- Experience: the distinctiveness, depth and reward of the specific visit for its intended purpose.
- Visitor friendliness: practical ease, considering arrival, booking, physical effort, cost and flexibility. It does not measure residents’ friendliness or certify access or safety.
The scale: 9–10 exceptional reward or unusually low planning friction; 7–8.5 strong with specific trade-offs; 5–6.5 worthwhile for a particular interest or requiring meaningful preparation; 3–4.5 limited reward or substantial friction; 0–2.5 very weak fit or extreme friction. Half points express editorial nuance, not measured precision.
Planning blend: (40 × Experience + 55 × Visitor friendliness) ÷ 95, rounded to the nearest half point. Keep the axes visible: the same blend can describe very different visits. Sustainability remains separately unrated and never blocks the blend. No place or county average is inferred.
Evidence: reasons, scope, source links and dates appear on every scored place page. These are research-based judgements prepared with AI assistance, not fabricated visitor reviews or Nick’s confirmed personal ratings. An assessment date does not redate an older source check. Cafés and food stops are rated for the planned visit and context, not untested food quality.
Closures and gaps: a closed place can retain an experience-potential score, but has no current Visitor friendliness score or blend. A missing score is not zero. Parking, fuel and other services remain explicitly unrated until their availability, pricing and service evidence support a useful assessment. These new editorial place scores do not publish or sign off the separate historical Spiti firsthand worksheet.
Scores are planning aids, not live access updates. Follow closure notices, operator information and current official warnings. Send a correction.
