Delhi Airport, Metro and Railway Transfers: What to Use

Choose transport from the actual airport terminal or railway station, then check the complete route to your base. Compare Metro ticket products against the rides you expect to take; the tourist card excludes Airport Express. Keep the final walk, luggage, screening, service window and return connection separate from the train ride itself.

Start with the actual arrival point

Choose the terminal or railway station printed on your booking, then plan the complete journey to your base. Separate an airport Metro station from a railway platform, and both from your accommodation. A direct line can still involve walks, security, luggage and a final local connection.

T3: Airport Express / Orange Line

Follow signs to IGI Airport Metro. New Delhi is useful when it is part of your actual onward route; it is not automatically the right destination for every hotel or train. Read the T3-to-NDLS transfer in full.

T1: Magenta Line

Terminal 1-IGI Airport is a different Metro station from T3’s Airport Express. Check the route, interchanges and final approach for your actual base. The T3 transfer map below does not apply directly to T1.

Airport terminal-specific Metro information

T2 or a change of terminal

The airport describes a walking or shuttle connection to T3. Follow current terminal instructions and the flight’s actual arrival terminal. A terminal change adds another part to the journey before you count the Metro ride.

Check NDLS, DLI or NZM

New Delhi railway station, Delhi Junction / Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin are different stations. Match the full name and code, then confirm the signed exit, station side and collection point for your onward journey.

Is the one- or three-day tourist card worth it?

A tourist card is useful when its covered rides and convenience fit your actual days. It is not an automatic saving for a first visit: a day spent mainly inside a monument or walking a market may involve relatively few Metro journeys. Compare your eligible journeys rather than the number of sights on the list.

Ticket choices to compare per traveller
    ChoiceWhat it suitsWhat to check
Single-journey QR ticketA small number of known station pairsCurrent official purchase channel, destination, validity and exit conditions
Stored-value / other supported cardRepeated journeys with payment from a balanceAccepted product, issue cost, recharge, refund and line coverage
One-day tourist cardUnlimited eligible DMRC rides during its validityDMRC FAQ lists ₹200 paid initially, including ₹50 refundable deposit
Three-day tourist cardEligible rides across its three-day validityDMRC FAQ lists ₹500 paid initially, including ₹50 refundable deposit

The current DMRC ticket-and-fare FAQ says the tourist card applies on DMRC lines except Airport Express. Ask the station customer-care centre about validity, purchase and deposit-return conditions. Confirm those terms before paying; do not rely on older PDFs with different prices.

    Compare your own expected fares

Use the fare for each station pair from DMRC, then enter the total for the period and one traveller. This tool does not estimate fares from sightseeing stops.

Enter your expected covered fares to compare. Airport Express, local rides and other operators are excluded.

What counts as a Metro journey?

A station-pair fare is a transport input, not the cost of visiting a monument. Keep admission, food, optional purchases, local rides and luggage arrangements separate. A tourist card is not a monument pass and does not pay a rickshaw or an airport transfer outside its coverage.

Check whether your chosen product supports the precise line and interchange. Do not assume another operator’s line is covered because a map shows a connected network. Keep each traveller’s valid ticket available for entry and exit, and follow the staff instructions for your ticket type.

    Use a simple comparison first

List the outward and return station pairs for each actual day. Include only trips you expect to make; adding speculative rides to make a pass look cheaper does not improve your plan. If the difference is small, purchase convenience and whether you can recover the deposit may matter more than a theoretical saving.

    Protect the correct ticket

Use the current DMRC purchase channels linked from its own site or station customer care. Check the destination and fare before paying. Keep the ticket or supported device usable until you have exited; do not assume a screenshot or a link received from an unsolicited seller is valid.

    Metro plus the final approach

Read each place’s approach notes before selecting the nearest station on a map. Red Fort’s visitor approach is different from a pin in the palace complex. Humayun’s Tomb and Sunder Nursery have separate public entrances. Qutub’s Metro station does not remove the final street connection to the ticket entrance.

Review walking only where the actual crossings, surfaces and access suit your group. An onward auto or arranged ride can be a separate choice; agree the destination, pickup point and fare method before departure. With luggage, a direct road transfer can sometimes fit better than multiple station changes, but traffic makes arrival times variable.

Late trains, delayed flights and the return

Check the usable departure from the station you will actually board at. A terminus’s first or last train time is not the same as a service at IGI Airport or an intermediate station. Allow for waiting, security, interchange walks and the final connection, and check disruption notices separately.

For a railway connection, work back from your train’s boarding arrangements and actual platform. For a flight, keep the airline’s airport reporting time and correct terminal ahead of optional sightseeing. If the useful Metro service does not fit, arrange an authorised alternative and verify its pickup and fare method.

Keep the return plan before leaving for a market or monument. Enter a neighbourhood or public landmark as your return area in the itinerary planner, then review its online connection. The airport guide separates each part of the T3–NDLS transfer; its checklist can stay with your saved day without adding stations as sightseeing stops.

    Access, baggage and meeting points

If stairs, long walks or a crowded interchange would be difficult, ask about the actual station-to-entrance route before committing. Confirm lift access and the final collection point with staff or your transport provider. A nearby station and an accessible monument are separate checks; neither proves that the whole connection is step-free.

Keep baggage within what you can manage through screening, ticket gates and busy platforms. For a group, choose a recognisable meeting landmark before moving through a station or market, and agree what to do if someone is separated. If meeting a driver, share the station name, side and pickup landmark rather than only a generic map pin.

Use your public starting or return area in the planner to keep those connections with the day. A saved plan is a reading aid, not a transport reservation. Tickets, booking references and identity documents should remain in your own travel records.

    Questions before you go

Does the Delhi Metro tourist card include Airport Express?

The current DMRC FAQ excludes Airport Express. Plan and pay for that journey separately, and confirm the product and conditions with DMRC before purchase.

Is the three-day card valid for three separate sightseeing days of my choice?

Do not assume that. DMRC describes validity from the date of sale. Ask customer care how the exact validity applies before buying; it is not a flexible choice of three unrelated dates.

Is the cheapest ticket always the best transfer?

No. Ticket price excludes the effect of luggage, interchange walks, final approaches and whether the useful service runs when you need it. Compare the complete journey for your group.

Does the planner calculate Metro fares or guarantee connections?

No. The ticket tool compares an estimate you enter against the linked card prices. The planner keeps selected visits and an optional arrival checklist, with online directions and operator checks separate.
