DELHI DAY PLAN / Shahjahanabad / Old Delhi
Old Delhi Walking Route: Red Fort, Jama Masjid & Chandni Chowk
Start with Red Fort, continue to Jama Masjid when tourist access permits, and finish with a limited Chandni Chowk market circuit. Treat the fort visit, street connections, mosque access and food break as separate parts of the outing. Choose a return landmark before entering the lanes, and remove stops when time or conditions change.
Shahjahanabad was both an imperial capital and a working city. The fort’s ceremonial spaces, the mosque’s ongoing worship and the market’s specialised trades reveal different parts of that story. Allow time to notice those changes instead of racing between photographs.
Preview first, then choose whether to apply. Your named saved trips are kept.
Know the shape of the day
- Main visit
- Red Fort
- Walking & terrain
- Long monument walks, mosque steps and busy market lanes. This is not a verified step-free circuit.
- Transfers
- Review the fort-to-mosque and mosque-to-market approaches separately. Choose walking only where the actual gate, crossing and street conditions suit your group; a local ride is an alternative, with a fare agreed before departure.
- Breaks
- Set aside a seated meal and a separate rest break. These are additional to the visit allowances.
The visit allowances below exclude arrival, queues, transfers, meals and breaks.
Route map: the visits in order
A limited market circuit, with an optional extension
Core route: choose a lane, not every lane
After the mosque, use a current walking reference towards the Chandni Chowk market area. Dariba Kalan is associated with jewellery and attar; Kinari Bazaar with decorative trims. Choose one short out-and-back exploration and keep a recognisable return landmark. These are lane choices within the market visit, not extra timed attractions in the planner.
Khari Baoli only if energy and time remain
The spice market adds another leg beyond the core route. Select the extension on the map to see its area and check that leg separately. It is not included in the three-stop planner template or its visit allowance. Allow for the extra walk and a return connection before committing.
Walking or a rickshaw?
Compare the actual approach at each crossing. If using a rickshaw for a street connection, agree the destination, price or fare method, waiting and whether it covers the whole group before departure. Do not assume it can deliver you through a monument entrance or into every lane.
Entry, food and photography decisions
Check Red Fort’s current admission notice and ticket categories with ASI. Do not build the day around an old blanket Monday-closure rule. The fort ticket does not cover mosque admission or other separately ticketed experiences.
Jama Masjid is an active place of worship. Delhi Tourism lists different tourist entry arrangements for Indian and foreign visitors. Follow current worship restrictions, dress instructions and on-site photography directions; ask before photographing people. If tourist entry is unavailable, move to the market and keep the mosque optional.
For a food break, decide your dietary requirements before ordering and ask about preparation, ingredients and water. No lane, stall or route can guarantee an allergy-safe meal. Choose a break that suits your needs rather than treating a named food lane as compulsory. Do not add an unplanned food trail on top of a tiring monument day.

Questions before you go
Can I see all three places in one walking day?
They form a coherent outing, but allow separately for monument visits, street connections, queues, worship access and a food break. The visit allowances are not a total outing time.
Does a Red Fort ticket include Jama Masjid?
No. Treat the fort and mosque as separate admission arrangements and check the current visitor category and access at each.
Can tourists enter Jama Masjid during prayers?
Follow the mosque’s current visitor and worship arrangements. Tourist entry is not guaranteed throughout the day; skip or defer this stop when access is restricted.
How do I make the route shorter?
Preview the fort-and-market selection and keep the market circuit limited. The optional Khari Baoli extension is outside the core planner template.
Connecting your arrival and your day
Read the airport T3–NDLS transfer guide and keep its optional checklist separately in your Delhi plan. Choose the guide for your actual railway station and terminal.
Start and finish
Getting there
Start with the Red Fort visitor approach; check the entrance and your arrival connection before leaving your base.
Arrival and onward connectionsGetting back
Finish at a chosen Chandni Chowk landmark or collection point. Plan the connection back to your base before entering the lanes.
Add a starting / return area in the planner to keep it with your saved day. Use a neighbourhood or landmark rather than a private address.
The visits, in order
Red Fort
About 2 hours inside; security and arrival are extra.
Read the sequence from gateway and covered bazaar to public audience hall and palace spaces as a planned imperial city.
Approach: Use the Lahori Gate visitor approach as your orientation, then follow current ASI entry and security instructions. The monument-centre map pin is not a drop-off point.
Admission: Select your admission category and purchase channel on the official ASI information. Museums and evening programmes may have separate arrangements.
Jama Masjid
Allow about 1 hour, subject to visitor access around worship.
Treat this as an active place of worship as well as a monument. Give worshippers space and ask before photographing people.
Approach: Choose the gate currently admitting visitors and agree your group’s meeting point before entering. A nearby Metro station is only the first part of the approach.
Admission: Delhi Tourism distinguishes domestic and foreign visitor arrangements. Check the applicable admission and tourist hours; follow clothing, footwear and photography instructions on site.

Chandni Chowk
Up to 90 minutes for a deliberately limited market circuit; shorten freely.
Look for the different trades and daily routines of a living commercial district; you do not need to collect every lane.
Approach: This is a neighbourhood, not one ticketed gate. Pick the lane or landmark you want and a station exit or agreed collection point for your return.
Admission: There is no single neighbourhood admission ticket. Shopping, food, local rides and entry to individual venues are separate choices.
Make it shorter
Keep the fort and a limited market circuit; leave the mosque for another visit if access, steps or time do not suit. Shorten the market too if needed.
Preview the shorter selection →
If the main visit is unavailable
If the fort is unavailable, choose the garden-tomb day when its sites are open and outdoor conditions suit. Otherwise keep only the mosque and a short market visit that work for your group; remove the fort from your plan.
If outdoor conditions do not suit
Both the fort and markets involve outdoor exposure. For unsuitable heat, air quality or rain, postponing the outdoor circuit is a valid choice; a shorter market walk is not an indoor alternative.
