Spinc Short Route from the Upper Lake

The blue Spinc Short Route is a hillwalk with a strong view of the Upper Lake. “Short” distinguishes it from longer Spinc routes; it does not turn the outing into an easy lakeside stroll.

Source-based editorial assessment · out of 10

How does this stop fit your trip?

Experience

9.5 / 10

Choose it as the main walking objective of the day, with suitable preparation and a route-specific weather decision. If the conditions or the group do not fit, use a lower-valley plan. You do not need to combine a successful hike with every other Glendalough attraction.

Visitor friendliness

4.5 / 10

NPWS classes the route as strenuous. The panoramic photograph shows the landscape, not the current condition of the path or a safe navigation line. Start from the official Upper Lake trail area. Check the current map and notices at the Information Office, then follow the blue route only when conditions and preparation suit.

Best for: Prepared walkers seeking an upland route

Planning blend: 6.5 / 10 · Sustainability: unrated

Why these scores? Method, dates & sources

Experience considers the reward and depth of this particular stop. Visitor friendliness considers practical ease: arrival, booking, physical demands, cost and flexibility. These are editorial judgements based on linked information, not visitor averages or a claim of a personal visit.

Assessed . Supporting guide source-check date: 2026-10-19. The assessment date does not mean every linked source was newly checked.

The blend uses (40 × Experience + 55 × Visitor friendliness) ÷ 95, rounded to the nearest half point. Missing sustainability does not affect it. A missing current visit score is not zero and has no blend.

A high score is not a safety clearance or a guarantee of step-free access. Food-stop scores concern the planned visit, not an untested meal. Read the scale and scope · Suggest a correction.

What you will actually see

01

An elevated view

The route’s reward is the different perspective over the valley; the climb is part of earning that view.

02

A signed loop

Choose the blue route deliberately rather than joining a longer white or red route by accident.

The story behind the visit

Choose the hillwalk before the viewpoint

The most useful planning choice happens before the climb. Compare the official route with the ability, equipment and daylight available to your group. Leave a lower-level alternative in the plan so that changing course does not feel like losing the entire day. A conservative choice made early is better than trying to recover a bus deadline by hurrying over steep ground. Source ↗

Older images often present the Spinc as a continuous narrow timber boardwalk. NPWS reported completed trail upgrades in November 2025, including stone and gravel sections, while retaining the hillwalk classification. That change matters when choosing photographs and expectations: an attractive old surface is not an up-to-date route description. Use current signs and official notices on the day. Source ↗

What visitors notice

The available Spinc accounts make the trade-off clear: the elevated views come with climbing and exposure to changing weather. Many describe longer loops, so their distances and completion times do not apply to the short route in this guide. Choose the current signed route and treat turning back as a perfectly reasonable decision.
