The surviving towers
From permitted public areas, look at how the two towers connect. The loss of half the building makes the remaining structure easier to misread without context.

Listowel Castle stands beside the town square with a much smaller footprint than its history suggests. Two tall towers and the wall joining them are what survive. When interior visits operate, a guide helps turn that fragment into a defensive building with a river, a siege and a reason for being here.

Worth including in a Listowel town visit when guided access is available. It is not a reason to promise an open interior on an autumn drive: OPW has closed the site for the 2026 season. For now, treat it as exterior town context and plan a later seasonal visit for the rooms.
OPW states that Listowel Castle is closed for the 2026 season and expects to welcome visitors in 2027. Recheck before planning an interior visit.

Experience considers the reward and depth of this particular stop. Visitor friendliness considers practical ease: arrival, booking, physical demands, cost and flexibility. These are editorial judgements based on linked information, not visitor averages or a claim of a personal visit.

The story behind the visit
OPW describes Listowel as the Fitzmaurice rebels’ final bastion in 1600. A twenty-eight-day siege ended with the castle’s capture and execution of the remaining garrison. That severe history belongs alongside, rather than beneath, the attractive town-square setting. Source ↗
