attraction · Panaji, Old Goa and the central north coast
Enter Old Goa’s Basilica of Bom Jesus to see its gilded altar and the shrine of St Francis Xavier, part of Goa’s World Heritage church ensemble.
From research
Make this a principal Old Goa stop if religious history and church architecture interest you. Combine it with nearby Sé Cathedral while leaving space between visits for heat, queues and worship.
Know before you book: A pilgrimage church as well as a monument, the basilica can restrict sightseeing during religious activity. A normal visit is not a special exposition of the relics, and access to ancillary spaces is not assured.
Place highlights
Look at the stacked levels, carved columns and IHS emblem before entering. Compare the darker exterior with the pale façade of Sé Cathedral across the precinct.
From permitted visitor areas, look for St Ignatius and the Child Jesus in the gilded reredos. Give the woodcarving time rather than walking straight past to the shrine.
Find the saint’s chapel on the south side of the transept when access permits. Regard the tomb and casket as objects of devotion; follow the viewing route and avoid disrupting prayer.
The story behind the visit
Completed in 1605, Bom Jesus belongs to the churches and convents through which European architectural forms spread to Catholic missions elsewhere in Asia. UNESCO also emphasises the use of local materials and practices: the wider ensemble records adaptation as well as imported styles. Source ↗
Dated visitor information
Arrange transport to Old Goa rather than the similarly prominent Immaculate Conception Church in Panaji. Visit Sé Cathedral nearby on the same outing and agree a clear return pickup before exploring. Official visitor information ↗
