Westmeath: things to do & places to visit

Westmeath’s lakes are an invitation to choose a shore and stay a while, not a promise of a continuous path around every stretch of water. The county balances that open landscape with substantial estate gardens, monastic ruins and smaller towns. Belvedere and Tullynally offer different garden experiences; Fore and Uisneach ask different kinds of historical questions, with a booked guide especially valuable at the latter. Athlone makes an easy base for the Shannon and a contrast to the rural northern county. Build the day around one major visit and a nearby walk or village. Seasonal gardens, active churches and private heritage land all have their own rules, so the map’s collection of pins should not be read as a list of places guaranteed to admit visitors today.

Numbered guide to the places below, with a map for each stop. Numbers help you browse; they are not a visitor ranking. Dated closures are shown on the cards and take priority over sightseeing suggestions.

city

1. Athlone East Bank and Shannon Waterfront

Athlone makes the Shannon feel like the centre of a town rather than a line on a map. Start on the east bank, look across to the castle, and give the bridge and streets time between larger attractions.

Worth your time? Choose it for a town-and-river break on a Midlands journey. A waterfront stroll does not include a cruise, castle ticket or restaurant recommendation.

2. Belvedere House Gardens and Park

Belvedere combines a lakeside estate walk with an unusually theatrical folly, the Jealous Wall. It works best when you let the grounds set the pace rather than rushing from house to wall.

Worth your time? Choose it for a varied outdoor estate visit near Mullingar. Check what is included and open if the house interior is central to your plans.

3. Fore Abbey

Fore's ruined buildings sit in a broad valley, giving the visit room to breathe. The abbey is the central stop, but the surrounding monuments make more sense when explored as a landscape.

Worth your time? A rewarding choice for monastic ruins without a tightly scheduled museum circuit. Follow a published local walk only if time, ground conditions and access allow.

4. Hill of Uisneach

Uisneach needs its stories as much as its views. A guided visit turns an apparently gentle hill into a landscape of archaeology, myth and ideas about Ireland's centre.

Worth your time? Book a guided visit if those layers interest you. This is privately owned land, so do not treat the hill as an unrestricted public viewpoint.

5. Kilbeggan Distillery

Kilbeggan's old machinery, waterwheel and riverside setting give whiskey production a physical scale. It is a different proposition from a vast modern production tour. Go for the working heritage rather than simply adding another tasting to the day.

Worth your time? Choose it for industrial heritage as much as tasting. Book the current experience and arrange a non-drinking driver or other return transport.

Lough Ennell landscape context

nature

6. Lough Ennell at Lilliput

Lilliput gives a shore-level view of Lough Ennell, where the appeal is water, reeds and the changing sky rather than an elevated panorama. It is a gentle contrast to an indoor heritage visit.

Worth your time? Choose it for a lakeside pause or a walk from a confirmed public access point. This guide recommends a shore visit, not swimming or independent boating.

7. Multyfarnham Friary

Multyfarnham is still a place of worship, which changes the pace of a visit. The abbey and its setting suit a quiet look before exploring the village rather than a loudly narrated circuit.

Worth your time? Choose it for religious heritage with a living community. Put worship and privacy ahead of sightseeing, and check visitor access if the church interior matters.

8. Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park

Dún na Sí is a useful family stop because outdoor space and heritage interpretation can be balanced rather than competing for everyone's attention. Traditional buildings and rural collections give the walk a subject.

Worth your time? Choose the heritage visit when you want the historical displays; check the amenity park separately if the aim is simply fresh air and play.

Checked 19 October 2026: the operator publishes an April–September season for the Heritage Park. The free Amenity Park is a separate visit. Confirm any out-of-season heritage event; ordinary heritage entry is excluded from active planner suggestions.

9. Lough Derravaragh at Donore

A Derravaragh visit works best with a named shore in mind. Westmeath tourism identifies Donore near Multyfarnham as the main public area; the broad lake itself is not a road destination. Go for the view and the Children of Lir association, keeping the outing modest until you have confirmed the arrival.

Worth your time? Worth choosing for a quiet lakeside detour near Castlepollard or Multyfarnham. Do not expect a continuous public path around the whole lake.

Current Donore public entrance and parking position remain unverified; use the official named arrival description and confirm locally before travel. Checked 19 October 2026.

10. Tullynally Castle Gardens

Tullynally's pleasure is the sequence of spaces: walled gardens lead into woodland and lakeside planting, with the Gothic house giving the whole place a recognisable backdrop.

Worth your time? Make time for a garden visit rather than only the castle photograph. Plan around seasonal opening and book a separate house tour if that is what you want.

Checked 19 October 2026: the published 2026 garden season ended on 27 September. The operator distinguishes year-round parkland walking from seasonal garden entry; confirm the precise access before travelling.
