Kildare: things to do & places to visit

Kildare is a good place to trade a crowded sightseeing schedule for a garden, a house tour or a long stretch beside the canal. The variety is the attraction: the Japanese Gardens and working stud at Tully have little in common with the peatland story at Lullymore, while Maynooth and Celbridge put historic buildings within reach of a town-based day.

The useful question is which kind of visit you want. A parkland walk does not necessarily include a house interior; an estate does not promise unrestricted access everywhere; and a family attraction will feel different from a quiet ornamental garden. Pick one main visit and a nearby outdoor option. It leaves time to notice the landscape rather than spending the day crossing the county between gates.

Numbered guide to the places below, with a map for each stop. Numbers help you browse; they are not a visitor ranking. Dated closures are shown on the cards and take priority over sightseeing suggestions.

1. Carton House Demesne, Maynooth

A tree-lined extension to a Maynooth town walk, with Carton Avenue and the managed hotel estate kept distinct.

Worth your time? Choose the avenue for a slower stretch after time in town. Keep the walk modest unless onward access is confirmed. The value is the change from street to landscape, not an assumed free tour of a mansion or hotel grounds.

2. Castletown Demesne Parkland Walks

Free parkland and riverside walking around Castletown, with a designed landscape that rewards more than a quick circuit.

Worth your time? Choose this for outdoor time in Celbridge without committing to an interior tour. Pick a manageable walk from the estate map, leave time to look back at the house, and keep the gate you entered through in mind for the return.

3. Castletown House

A Palladian house in Celbridge with decorative interiors, a surviving print room and parkland beside the Liffey.

Worth your time? Choose the house tour when architecture and decorative arts are the main reason for the outing. Reserve a comfortable tour slot, then use a shorter parkland walk as a complement. Someone who mainly wants fresh air can choose the separate parkland visit.

4. Grand Canal Greenway (Sallins to Naas)

A canal outing around Sallins and the Naas branch, with different route directions and surfaces to check before setting out.

Worth your time? Choose it for waterway detail, town context and a walk you can shorten or extend deliberately. Select the main canal or Naas branch before starting, and plan whether you will retrace your route or use a separate onward connection.

5. Irish National Stud & Gardens

The Japanese Gardens may be the photograph that brings you here, but the better visit gives the working stud and the other gardens a fair share of the day. This is a place to slow down and follow your curiosity, whether that leads to horses, planting or the story of the grounds.

Worth your time? Make this the main stop rather than a garden squeezed between two house tours. It suits a mixed-interest group: someone can come for the horses and someone else for the gardens, without forcing either into an entire day devoted to the other’s hobby.

6. Larchill Arcadian Gardens

An ornamental-farm landscape with a lake walk and follies, requiring a confirmed opening or appointment.

Worth your time? Choose Larchill for a specific interest in garden history and landscape surprises. Confirm an actual visit date before planning the journey. It rewards following the garden’s own walk more than arriving for an exterior photograph and leaving.

7. Lullymore Heritage & Discovery Park

Lullymore makes the Bog of Allen feel like somewhere with a story, rather than a stretch of flat country you drive across. Woodland, peatland interpretation and family activities share the site, so it helps to arrive knowing which side of the park interests you most.

Worth your time? Choose it for a family outing with room to wander, or for an accessible introduction to peatland history within a managed attraction. If you want a silent wilderness walk, choose a dedicated nature route instead: this is a visitor park with several audiences.

8. Maynooth Town & St Patrick's College

A town and historic college outing, with chapel and museum visits dependent on their own visitor arrangements.

Worth your time? Choose Maynooth for a flexible day mixing streets, campus architecture and a confirmed interior visit. Decide which organised tour or collection matters to you before building the day around it. A town walk remains a separate option if interiors are unavailable.

9. Steam Museum & Lodge Park Walled Garden, Straffan

Stationary engines and a walled garden at Straffan, with scheduled steam-ups that change the character of the visit.

Worth your time? Choose it for engineering interest, especially when a listed steam-up fits your date. Decide whether you want the museum, garden or both, then leave time to watch a demonstration rather than arriving at the end of the session.

The FitzGerald stronghold in central Maynooth, with an interior visitor season that has ended for 2026.

Worth your time? Use this page for the castle’s context and to check a future in-season visit. For a current day in Maynooth, arrange a town or college outing independently of castle admission. Do not make the keep’s exhibition the fixed anchor without a new opening confirmation.
