Is this worth your time?
Choose a gardens-led outing or a visit that includes the castle, then book the corresponding ticket. The castle interior and grounds can have different opening arrangements, including closures affecting only the house.
Know before you book: Castle closures are also listed for the morning of 14 November and for 19 November 2026. Gardens follow a separate calendar; check both when planning your visit.
The story behind the visit
A townhouse, a demesne and a political setting
Despite its name, Hillsborough is an Irish Big House rather than a medieval castle. Wills Hill developed it in the eighteenth century as one side of a Georgian square. That relationship with the town is unusual: the house did not begin as a remote residence approached through a long estate drive. Its setting helps connect the Hill family’s domestic ambitions with the town they also helped shape. Source ↗
The house and gardens were altered by later generations, and the British government bought the property in 1925 for the Governor of Northern Ireland. Its subsequent role in official hospitality and political negotiations adds another layer to the family story. The garden landscape offers its own route through these changes, with formal spaces, woodland and water. It can be understood independently of whichever interior rooms are available on a particular date. Source ↗
